A sleigh-load of holiday decor ideas

SARAH LAING

Tis the season to deck the halls — but with what?

“Post-pandemic, we’re looking for a fresh start and to capture that holiday magic again,” says Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s resident trend expert, about Christmas décor ideas. “We’re looking to go all out with mood-boosting hues and bold, bright items that spark joy. Holiday trends are embracing maximalism this year, so nothing is off the table. Whatever brings a smile to your family’s faces is the way to go.”

With an expert assist from Isom Johnson, we’ve compiled a sleigh-load of chic holiday decor ideas to make the season even more magical.

For the minimalist: Neutral and nature-inspired

All-white trees are having their own moment this year — white branches, white baubles, white lights — and can make a nice palate cleanser, even in the most maximalist home.

This pampas grass wreath is a non-traditional take that wouldn’t be out of place in, say, a modernist villa in Ibiza.

A pre-lit, pre-frosted tree looks lovely in a dining room nook or atop a small table and can be used year after year. Gluckstein Home tree, $126 (on sale from $180), thebay.com

For the eclectic: Retro kitsch

“This trend also embraces bright colours and embodies sustainability while celebrating the retro styles of the ’50s and ’60,” says Isom Johnson. Add pops of nostalgia and personality to your home with unique items like vintage mixing bowls and old-school cookie jars.

Go full kitsch with a pin-up — and her puppy — swinging from your tree. Myrtle & Mary ornament, $41, wolfandbadger.com

Lean into the holiday spirit with a few key festive items like this delightful holly-print cookie jar. Vintage Christmas canister, $48, etsy.com

For the glamorous: Enchanted forest

“Mix and match woodland themes like mushrooms and fresh greenery with luxury fabrics like velvet in tones like emerald green and midnight blue,” suggests Isom Johnson. “Add drama with festive, shimmery touches like iridescent tabletop trees.”

These Scandi-style candlesticks, made from rich walnut, are the perfect complement to a dark fairy-tale mood. Candlesticks (set of 3), from $168, etsy.com

This drinks table has the advantage of being practical, but also elegant enough to keep out year-round. Toadstool drinks table, $342, anthropologie.com
