Ford can institute a single public school system
York’s Catholic school trustees are abusing their power by refusing to raise the Pride flag. Their day of reckoning is coming, June 6
Martin Regg Cohn’s column re- minds that past injustices can be corrected.
For example, Cohn helps by stat- ing the fact that while our Canadian constitution cannot be changed “on a whim and a prayer,” both Newfoundland and Quebec have secured constitutional amend- ments enabling those provinces to establish a single, publicly-funded school system. Since our current premier has no hesitation about using the infamous “notwithstanding clause,” he could “get it done” and institute a single public school system here in Ontario.
The need for such a system is clearly evident. School systems that are based on religious beliefs, such as unconditional love for all people, are in violation of their own foundational principles when they discriminate against LGBTQ persons.
The continuing strife over Pride flags and acceptance of LGBTQ persons must be resolved and one of the best ways of doing so is to eliminate public funding for school systems that refuse to accept the inclusive principles of our society, and love for one’s neighbour.
