Weir makes cut thanks to clutch putt

DALTON FINKBEINER

Mike Weir will play the weekend at the RBC Canadian Open for the first time since 2014.

Flirting with the cutline heading to his final hole of the day, the 53year-old drained a 40-foot putt to card a 2-under round of 70 and secure a Saturday tee time. Weir said the putt helped make up for some missed opportunities earlier in the day.

“Today I felt like I played quite a bit better, and the putter was just not great,” said Weir, making his 30th career Canadian Open start. “So, it was a bonus to see that last one go in on the last hole. Unexpected one. But, yeah, I feel good.”

What made the round even more impressive was the conditions he had to deal with.

The morning wave on Friday battled wet and windy weather during their rounds, causing Oakdale Golf and Country Club to play even more difficult.

“It played really long. It was cool, wet. The ball wasn’t travelling at all,” said Weir, next year’s captain of the Presidents Cup International team.

Weir still moves the needle for Canadian golf fans, too. Though a relatively large contingent of Canadians in the primes of their careers and are more of a threat to win this week at Oakdale, there remains a level of reverence for the 2003 Masters champion.

“It’s really nice. They have been with me for 30 years. So, to have them still cheering for me, and I was glad to pull off some good shots for them today. Yeah, it makes you feel great.”
